We slept in just a little today. Didn't get into the park till almost noon which is unheard of for me usually. I'm a little bummed because we only have four more days. But then I was downloading some of my pictures and videos to cds to free up space on my laptop, and I was looking at videos of the cranes in March, and I got all excited again. There's always something to look forward to in nature it seems. After the holidays it'll start all over, eagles in winter, cranes in early spring, then summer again. I love the seasons.
Not much pictures/videos today. I just tried to enjoy the park and the bears at the discovery center. The wolves slept all the while we were there, and the bears are so big! Sam is over 1,000lbs now. His sister isn't far behind at over 800. They're building a bigger area for the wolves with a nature cabin where they'll hold programs and you can watch wolf movies. It has big windows that look out on the wolf enclosure. It'll be nice for next year when we come back.
I'm still working on the bear video, (the Sam and Illie show), I'll probably add music or something. Sam is so cute sitting in the water, putting stuff on his head and playing with his feet. They're both so cute, fat and happy as far as I can tell.
One more thing, Roxanne is very happy because, well we saw a new bird. We got a couple of huckleberry shakes as we left West Yellowstone and into the park. They were very thick and tasty of course and I was having a hard time eating and driving. So I parked in a small lot/turn out right next to the Yellowstone River, very pretty and the sun was setting. I jokingly told Roxanne to look for Dippers, (a bird she's wanted to see out here every year but hadn't seen one yet). They're cute little gray birds with normal bird feet that hang around the banks of rivers, then all of a sudden they'll jump INTO the rushing water to get bugs. They dive right in even though they don't have duck feet and swim around! Well just as I said that she actually saw one! Yea! She got out her scope and took pix and videos. As we were doing that, a bunch of cars kept coming into the lot and slowing down. I thought they were coming over to see what we were looking at, which is what everyone does in Yellowstone. But no, they were ducking a huge male buff who was walking down the middle of the road! LOL! He walked right by us. It's funny to watch traffic have to stop for them. Then when we got to Mammoth, (we have to drive through Mammoth to get back to Gardiner), there was a large herd of elk. They were everywhere! Yikes! I tried to go down one small road and a bull was running after a female almost right in front of us! The female ran across our road, but the bull just stood there looking at us. OMG! Then he bugled at us! Holy crap! I turned around very fast and drove the other way. Those guys will charge a vehicle if they're all wound up.
We finally got back to the hotel safe and sound. It was in the 60's in town, so I opened up our window a bit and I usually sit right next to it while I'm on my laptop. I can see out the window just fine. Well Rox was on her computer on her bed, and I heard a horrible animal sound outside! Yikes again! I don't know if it was an elk bugling or what but it echoed back by the river across the street. I don't know where the elk are in town right now because it was dark when we got back, but I'm not going out there to find out! LOL! I still like it here, though, it's really a lot of fun. I'd rather hear animals than gunshots anyday.
